Mother’s Day Pool Prep: Make Mom’s Day Easy

Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May, which in Connecticut is right around the time most pools are coming out of winter. With a little planning, Mom gets clear water and a quiet afternoon by the pool instead of a green cover and a to-do list. Here is how to have the pool ready for her.

Schedule the Opening Two to Three Weeks Ahead

A pool is not ready to swim in the day the cover comes off. The filter needs to run, debris has to be cleared, and the water usually takes several days and more than one round of chemicals to clear and balance. Aim to have the pool opened by late April so it has time to settle before the holiday. If you would rather not do it yourself, our pool opening service handles the cover, equipment start-up and first chemical treatment.

Get the Water Balanced Before the Weekend

Test the water a few days before Mother’s Day, not that morning, so there is time to correct anything that is off. Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6 and free chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm, then brush the walls, vacuum the floor and empty the skimmer and pump baskets. Our Connecticut pool water chemistry guide explains each reading and what to do when one drifts.

Do a Ten-Minute Safety Check

A family gathering usually means more children around the water than on a normal weekend. Before anyone arrives, walk the pool area and check the basics:

  • Gates close and latch on their own.
  • The winter cover is completely off and stored, not folded at the water’s edge.
  • Ladders, handrails and diving boards are tight.
  • Drain covers are in place and undamaged.
  • A life ring or reaching pole is within easy reach.
  • One adult is assigned to watch the water whenever children are swimming.

Set Up the Space Around the Pool

The water is only part of the day. Hose off the deck, wipe down the furniture, put out fresh towels and set up some shade. Pool water in May is still cold in Connecticut, so if you have a heater, turn it on a day or two ahead rather than that morning.

Give Her the Whole Season, Not Just the Day

The best version of this gift is a pool nobody in the family has to think about. With weekly pool maintenance, a technician tests and balances the water, cleans the pool and checks the equipment on every visit, so weekends are for swimming rather than chemistry.

Mother’s Day Pool Checklist

  1. Late April: open the pool and start the filter.
  2. One week before: test and balance the water, then brush and vacuum.
  3. Two days before: turn on the heater, clean the deck and furniture.
  4. The day before: retest the water, empty the baskets and do the safety walk.
  5. Mother’s Day: skim the surface in the morning and enjoy the day.
